Netflix domineert Emmy's met historische winst voor Originals

Na jaren als buitenstaander of kleine speler heeft Netflix de Emmy’s van 2021 absoluut gedomineerd. Sterker nog, streamingdiensten maakten überhaupt de dienst uit.

We zitten al bijna een decennium massaal op de bank achter Netflix. De streamingdienst domineert de kijkcijfers, het nieuws en de popcultuur.

Waar blijven de prijzen?

Toch kreeg het bedrijf de afgelopen tien jaar zelden de bijbehorende erkenning van de prestigieuzere kant van Hollywood: de prijzenjury’s. De Oscars, Emmy’s, dat soort werk.

Mede doordat juist de industrie zich vaak zelfs tegen Netflix keerde. Een bedrijf dat de boel op kwam schudden. Nu Netflix echter allang niet meer een buitenstaander is en elke Hollywood-reus op streamingdiensten duikt, komt het ook goed met die erkenning.

De afgelopen jaren waren het telkens netwerken als HBO en AMC die de grootste categorieën van de Emmy’s wonnen. De Oscars voor televisieproducties. De meest felbegeerde gouden beeldjes tijdens die prijzenshow zijn die voor Outstanding Drama en Outstanding Limited Series.

Netflix wint 44 Emmy’s

HBO maakt in die categorieën meestal de dienst uit, tot dit jaar. Netflix heeft namelijk beide prestigieuze beeldjes voor het eerst gewonnen tijdens de Emmy’s van afgelopen weekend.

The Crown heeft de streamingdienst de Emmy voor Outstanding Drama Series opgeleverd, en The Queen’s Gambit sleepte het beeldje voor Outstanding Limited Series in de wacht.

Met in totaal maar liefst 44 beeldjes won Netflix überhaupt de meeste Emmy’s van iedereen. Sterker nog, daarmee evenaart de grote rode N een record van CBS uit 1974.

Streamingdiensten, overal

Na Netflix komt HBO (Max) met 19 beeldjes, Disney+ met 14 prijzen en Apple TV+ met tien. Oftewel, het was sowieso een historische avond, want vrijwel elke categorie werd gedomineerd door een streamingdienst. De traditionele televisienetwerken waren praktisch nergens te bekennen.

Al moet je daar wel de kanttekening bij plaatsen dat HBO in principe nog steeds een netwerk is, maar nu toevallig met de introductie van HBO Max ook een streamingdienst in handen heeft.

Apple kan in ieder geval tevreden zijn. Het al vaak geprezen Ted Lasso, een Apple TV+ Original, won namelijk de prestigieuze Emmy voor Outstanding Comedy Series. Dat is zelfs een record: Apple TV+ is daarmee de streamingdienst die het snelst een Emmy wint met een serie, al in het tweede jaar dat het platform mee kan doen.
